WHAT IS SEO & HOW DOES IT WORK?
What is Search Engine Optimisation?
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) refers to "a structured approach used to increase the position of a company or its products in search engine natural or organic results listings for selected keywords or phrases" (Chaffey et al, 2012). This can take in the form of banner ads that may appear on top of websites or emails, keywords are also used for relevance and allows businesses to target a more specific market. It is used to improve visibility and 'attract website visitors' (Chaffey, 2020).
Here's an example;
When searching for a new 2021 diary, there are various diaries that appear first thing, making it appear more prominent rather than searching through numerous pages. Through using SEO, businesses are able to make their products or services appear on top, making it more eye catching as it is first thing that customers view. When looking for a new diary, I already came across two that I was interested in and did not have to scroll through links. This demonstrates how effective and efficient SEO can be.
So how do businesses integrate a successful SEO?
To implement a successful SEO, an approach is to incorporate the following 7 steps including:
1. GOALS: Define your goals
2. KEYWORDS: Identify keywords that best represent your offering & is relevant
3. ON PAGE SEO: get your website to "speak google"
4. CONTENT MARKETING: Create quality content for google and for humans
5. OFF PAGE SEO: Build links, leverage social media and go local
6. METRICS: Measure and learn from your results
7. LEARN: Never stop learning!
Ultimately, this is an approach that can be used to integrate Search Engine Optimisation, which can be beneficial to businesses as it will appear more prominent and is the first thing that customers see when searching for products or services before making their purchase, which is why SEO is important.
